Cleaning clothes, using scissors or other sharp objects, sweeping floors and visiting your wife's family are some of the things to avoid on Chinese New Year
According to Chinese superstition, doing any of these on 16th February will lead to bad luck for the entire coming year.
However it isn't all doom and gloom: 2018 is the Year of the Dog, an animal which symbolises luck. And fortunately our New Year feast was held on Saturday the 17th so we didn't have to worry about using sharp objects. But just to be on the safe side, chopsticks were issued to all.
After the starters, Peter Carpenter took the patrol boat to collect the main meal from a mysterious Chinese lady on the Surrey bank. Apparently this is an oriental tradition, which says that if you have lemon chicken, pork and rice it must be conveyed via water.
There were some great costumes too and I particularly liked Nigel's Fu Manchu moustache, which enabled him to do a pretty good impression of Christopher Lee.
