06/11/22

A current of 1 knot in the centre of the river and very variable winds, the most reliable being short periods of a south westerly wind, Going up river to a single port mark was best achieved by means of many short tacks of less than 5 meters each along the Middlesex bank. In the first race this was followed by a sort of run to a port mark off the car park followed by a starboard near the Surrey bank on the way back to the start line. Trees on the Surrey bank created a wind shadow which eliminated the periods of south westerly wind and periods of easterly winds were barely able to offset the current. In the second race and third races the starboard mark was removed. Charles Dennis made the best progress by means of quick tacking of his Laser. A Bosun which attempted to avoid the current and creep up the Surrey bank was stationary over the ground for long periods and found it difficult to make way back up river from the downstream port mark off the car park. GT.

30/10/22

End of BST, the 15:30 race was moved to 14:00 to give more time to pack up. Extremely shifty SSE, any, instant 180 changes, moving boom from full out Stb to full out Port and back. Charles Dennis thought it was the worse he has known it. While putting the boats away there was heavy rain.

23/10/22

Very wet until 11:00. Fortunately it was dry by the time sailing started and with a SE 1 to 2 wind sailing was reasonble. Usually races are not started befor the published time without advance notification but the forecast from 16:00 was for heavy rain so the 15;30 race was brought forward to 14:00 to replace the TFC event. A good decision because there was a torential thunder storm.

22/10/22

The Woirking Party had 36 members and 2 prospective members attend; probably the most we have had, around 20 is a more usual number. The csr park was fuller than I have ever seen. A huge number of tasks were completed. The day ended with a lovely late lunch.

16/10/22

Terrible. Wind any direction and periods of zero, the anemometer wasn't rotating. To add some interest the 14:00 event was a very short slalom using all marks in both directions. There was a bit more wind for the last race, 8mph, but still any direction.

09/10/22

Very fine warm day, S to E very Variable 1-3, 5 t0 13 mph. Josh thought it was the worst he had experienced in 5 years.

02/10/22

NW 0-1, 2-8 mph, a bit nore for the last race..

25/09/22

Light N to W variable 0-2, 2 to 8 mph. The 14:00 race was made more interesting by having a very short course of 6 marks in line as a slalom in both diections.

18/09/22

E to W via N 2 gust 4, 5-14 mph. Good sail.

11/09/22

Very little Variable S wind, 0-1, 2 to 8 mph. 3 to 5 entries.

04/09/22

Forcast S 10 to18 mph, actually half that and very variable, sailing felt like any direction 0 to 1. No entry for the 11:00 race. The Newcomers talk by Mike Baker on getting round the course faster was well attended. Luca has been sailing the Topper for a few weeks, he likes it because easier to rig than the Pico.

24/08/22

Not much Southerly wind for sailing. The Topper and a Pico sailed and two canoes went out. There was a super supper evening for 19 members. Many thanks to Erica, a recent member, who bravely volunteered to prepare a bolognese sauce and Jacket potatoes followed by a huge portion of trifle; delicious.

21/08/22

Variable SW to NW 0 to 2, 0 to 7 mph wind. big variation in lap times. Sailing better in the morning.

17/08/22

A very wet day, torrential rain. Jean and Mike Hendra prepared a spagetti supper with cherry tomatoes, anchovies and capers for 10 members.

14/08/22

07/08/22

The lowest wind speed forcast I have seen: W 1 mph to gust 1 mph. Although very variable and patchy fortunately we had more: 1 to 9 mph and sailing was much better than expected. In the last race the first lap was 5 minutes and the last lap 25 minutes. Alastair took Andrea and Megan Nettle as crew in the last race, their first sail and they had a wonderful time.

31/07/22

Sailing was not as good was expected with the West 2-3 wind, rather shifty and patchy. 3 Bosuns and the patrol boats were busy with recent new members. The last race was short for 2 reasons; to give members time to watch the Enland v Germany Ladies football final and it started raining.

24/07/22

The forecast was SW 16 to 28 mph but it was very variable, any direction, 5 to 15 mph. About 6 recent members and visitors were taken out. 3 Bosuns were kept very busy.

17/07/22

A 1-2 S to SE wind (4 to 12 mph) gave a reasonable sail. Very hot, start of a heatwave.

10/07/22

Variable, patchy W-NE 0-1, 2-10 mph wind, very hot. The 14:00 fun event was picking uo floating balls, any propulsion method allowed. Sometimes sailinf was better than expected.

03/07/22

Very little fickle West 0-1 wind, 2-7mph. Newcomers event talk by Nigel, capsize drill and recovery.

26/06/22

Warm SW 1-2 gust 3, 7 to 14 mph. Very variable and shifty; Mike Baker said like being in a washing machine.

22/06/22

Conditions were ideal for the cruise through Sunbury lock to the Weir Hotel for a pub supper. Warm steady East 1-2 wind for the 13 members and 5 boats. The return sail was very slow for Nigel and Rodger and they accepted a tow from above the willows; arriving back at 23:00.

19/06/22

NNW to NE 1-2, 3 to 12 mph, very shifty.

12/06/22

Regatta |Sunday. Less wind was forecast but it was very similar to Saturday. W 5 to 15 mph, feeling like variable force 1-2 gust 3..

11/06/22

Regatta Saturday. Very fortunate that there was good sailing. W 5 to 15 mph, feeling like variable force 1-2 gust 3.

05/06/22

Forecast NE 7 to 12 mph but it was half that in the morning and 2 to 4 mph in the afternoon, variable and patchy but not fluky. Queens Jubilee weekend and only 3 boats.

29/05/22

Wind 0-1g2 but any direcrion. For the Newcomers event Richard Cannon talked on the importance of basic rules but RRS (Racing Rules of Sailing) legally only apply to boats racing. Most people think Power gives way to sail but there is an Environment Agency rule that says craft going across the river give way to other craft. The RUG 8 (River Users Group) has published a voluntary code of practice for unpowered craft. There is also the Colregs (Prevention of Collisions at sea) which can have a lot of legal clout. It is important to always keep a good lookout and keep clear if in doubt.

15/05/22

Open day. A grey overcast day, light rain but a much stronger easterly breeze giving a much better saling experience despite the rain. 7 club boats were used; all except the Graduate and Topper. There were 8 family groups totaling 23 people.

14/05/22

Open day. Very warm fine day, very light easterly breeze. Normaly we exibit a boat at Bushy Park Chestnut Sunday on the previous Saturday giving very good publicity but it wasn't held thia year so we lacked it's publicity. We did well to have 7 groups totaling 31 visitors. 6 club boats were used.

08/05/22

Conditions were ideal for the Cundy Trophy long distance race; a 6 to 12 mph steady East wind. Normally the Cundy Trophy is held when there are good conditions with an East wind concurrent with the 15:30 race.
The 15:30 event was 2 short Sprint races so the Cundy Trophy race was allocated to the 14:00 event in place of the TFC event.
The up stream mark was dropped ahead of the lead boat 20 minutes into the race at Rivermead Island at Sunbury. Mike Baker was 1st on PH so won the Cundy Trophy, Dane Halling was first on BH.
It was a very enjoyable race.

04/05/22

Start of Scheduled Wednesday afternoon sailing. Cool, very light winds, nobody sailing. Present during the day; Graham Thompson and Nigel Knowles. Grahm

01/05/22

A very variable light SSW wind. The 12:00 race was best. The 14:00 TFC (Training Fun Cruising) event was follow a leader with delibrate touching marks and penalties.

24/04/22

A NE 1-2 gust 3, 5 to 15 mph wind gave a good sail. The 14:00 race was a pursuit race.

23/04/22

22 members enjoyed a very succesful quiz by Colin Lea and an Indian supper organised by Rodger Wheeler; delicious large portion.

17/04/22

The weather was about as forecast; warm, 5 to 15 mph South East wind. which was much more variable than is normal for an East wind. There were some huge shifts, over 90 degrees. Sailing down stream to the first mark it was a struggle to keep clear of the bank; then often when in line with the mark it was possible to reach the mark without tacking with a huge lift.
There were seven boats racing for Easter chocolate eggs, plus three members running the races and 16 spectators.

10/04/22

At last we managed to race with 3 boats out – not the best sail ever but nice to be on the water again! The usual fluky winds but the current was minimal so everyone managed to get round the course ok. Nigel.

03/04/22

At short notice no OOD or Patrol Boat officers due to Covid and other health problems. Thanks to Rodger and Di Howley for providing cakes and to Graham for helping. Only 0 to 7 mph N wind, 0.5 knt current and sailing upstream would have been difficult. No one to sail so racing cancelled. 12 members were at the club.

27/03/22

The first day of the 2022 sailing seasion was cloudy with a 3 to 6 mph E to NE wind giving a reasonable sail. But only 1 member sailing so racing was cancelled. One kayak was paddled. As we left the sun came out.

19/03/22

Glorious cloudless day for Start of Season Party outside at 15:00 for Covid Safety. Sailing would have been very good; East 15 mph wind. Around 29 attended; Diana Carpenter provided baked potato, 3 pieces of assorted chicken and Coleslaw. For sweet there was a choise of 4 gateaus.

03/03/22

Fickle W variable shifty 0-1 wind, 2 to 7 mph. There was a newcomers event with a talk, demostration and practice of Capsize and recovery.

02/01/22

Substitute New Year's Day sail. Not the best sail I’ve had – but it was enjoyable nevertheless. The stream was running quite fast (2knt, yellow board warning) and the wind was a patchy 2-3 SW, so it was a challenge to keep station. The 2 boats were towed up to the Channel Marker to race back. The wind picked up a bit and Josh put in the first submission of the year for the water rat!
Jean and Mike once again provided some excellent cakes. Nigel Knowles
