With coats, scarfs and brollies at the ready 14 brave souls entered mid-stream forming a 3 motor boat convoy at 6.15pm; Don, Bryan and Alice taking their respective helms.
We noted Mrs Mallard duck fretting about without her little chick unfortunately – no doubt succumbing to the appetite of ‘Peter the Pike’ sometime over the last few days, that reminded some of us to order fish and chips later on as a token of revenge!
We made a slight detour down the backwater to see Joan’s friends and maybe receive a shot or two of something alcoholic! No such joy as they heard we were coming and hid behind the curtains until we passed by.
Diesel over Sail to the Weir Dinner
Wednesday 22nd June 2016 - Gareth Dixon
Earlier weather threats of heavy rains, thunder and lightning could not have been further from the truth as bright, warm conditions and no-wind met our upstream voyage.
It was interesting to see the many different house designs and refurbishments along that stretch; the usual river views including swan parents with 6 cygnets and even a small coot sitting upon its nest inside a sunken boat so proud of its new home.
30 minutes to get to the lock where Jon did the honours before our fleet made it to the pub around 7pm. Fast food service sitting outside under warm clear skies made for a very pleasant evening, the photos were on going and there was even a hint of evening sunshine around 7.45pm.
We headed back around 8.45pm, some of us noticing 3 coots sitting asleep on a raised branch along the way. The millions of mosi’s flying around the water’s edge hinted a sign of summer – surely it will start soon! The 3 boats safely made it back to the club around 9.30pm to see Nigel’s construction company still hard at work preparing the new ‘race hut’ roof under a rain-free sky.
All in all a great night, no need for brollies after all. The torrential thunder storm started shortly after we returned; there was a months worth of rain.
